Four years ago in April 2009, Android Inc. (now owned by search engine giant Google Inc.) implemented a code name for its Android OS versions. Ever since, all updates released in the marketplace by Android have followed that code. However with each new version, Android has gradually revealed its code name technique.
It doesn’t take an expert to figure out that Android has a strong affinity for naming its updates after appetizing items, especially the ones on the sweeter side. Another interesting point worth mentioning here is that Android not only names its OS versions after delicious and scrumptious treats, it does so in an alphabetical order. Starting from Android 1.5, where the name ‘Cupcake’ was used, all subsequent updates have been named after delicious sweet edibles in an alphabetical sequence. Even the previous two updates (Android Alpha and Beta) were alphabetically named although they have no association with anything tasty.
Listed below are all previous Android OS versions (from 2009 to date) in order of their release:
- Android 1.5, Cupcake
- Android 1.6, Donut
- Android 2.0, Éclair
- Android 2.2, Froyo
- Android 2.3, Gingerbread
- Android 3.0, Honeycomb
- Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich
- Android 4.1, Jelly Bean
- Android 4.4, KitKat
Next 8 Android Versions – My Suggestions:
I am most certain that Android will continue to follow its code-naming technique for future versions of its Operating System as well. But before they do so, I thought of some funny suggestions myself. I have also penned down a few witty update ideas (some of them possible) to accompany each of these versions. So here is how I think the next 8 Android OS releases should be named.
Android 5.1 Lollypop:
This Android update will bring down usability to kids of all ages including toddlers.
Android 5.3 Marshmallow:
This release will enable users to light a bonfire with their handheld devices.
Android 6.2 Nutella:
Optimized for all seasons, this update will allow you to regulate room temperature.
Android 6.4 Oreo:
The Android 6.4 Oreo will come with a built in scanner that can detect bacteria.
Android 7.0 Pancake:
Designed for Housewives, this Android release will make cooking easy as pie.
Android 7.3 Quirks:
Android 7.3 Quirks will feature the functionality to perform a fully body X-ray with your device.
Android 8.2 Raspberry:
Enter the future, literally! The Android Time Machine App will enable you to travel into the future.
Android 8.4 Soufflé:
The last Android update will let you monitor your sugar level. After all, you will need it having consumed all the sugary and mouth-watering Android versions.
